Track three competitors, not forty.

Competitor monitoring almost always fails the same way: someone adds every ASIN in the category, the tool faithfully reports everything, and within three weeks nobody opens it.

The category bestseller is usually the wrong ASIN

The instinct is to track the biggest names. They are rarely the listings taking your specific sales, because they often serve a different price band, a different use case, or a different buyer.

The ASINs that take your sales are the ones a shopper sees next to yours and picks instead. Those are the ones ranking beside you for your best keyword — which is a list you can read straight off a search result rather than guess at.

Search your single best keyword. The three or four listings around your own position are your real competitive set.

One rule per ASIN

A feed of every change cannot tell you which changes matter. A threshold can. So each competitor gets one rule, chosen for the thing that would actually change your decisions this month.

  • The one who discounts: alert when their price drops more than 10%. Their coupon is your conversion drop, and it is the most common cause of a dip that looks like a listing problem but is not.
  • The one who is climbing: alert when they overtake you on your main keyword. This shows days before it reaches your ACoS.
  • The one who is slipping: alert when their rating falls below 4.0. That is a window, not a threat, and it is worth knowing while it is open.

Review the list every quarter

A competitive set is a snapshot of who was beside you when you built it, and Amazon categories turn over faster than most watchlists do. The listing that took your sales in January is often not the one taking them in June — it may have run out of stock, lost the buy box, been delisted, or simply been displaced by something newer.

The symptom of a stale list is quiet. Alerts stop arriving, which feels like good news and usually is not: it means the ASINs you are watching have stopped mattering rather than stopped moving. A list producing no alerts for a whole quarter deserves a look, not congratulations.

Re-running the same search you used to build the list takes two minutes. If the three listings beside yours are not the three you are tracking, swap them and keep the rules.

A watchlist that has gone silent is more often out of date than it is reassuring.

What you cannot see, and who else cannot

Sales, inventory levels, and ad spend are not public, and no tool has them. What is public is price, star rating, review count, best-seller rank, availability, and search position — the same things any shopper sees, collected on a schedule instead of by hand.

That is worth stating plainly because the category is full of estimates presented as measurements. A competitor sales figure is a model built on the same public signals you can see yourself, and it is worth roughly what the model is worth.

The takeaway

Three to five ASINs, one rule each, chosen from the search result rather than the bestseller list. A short list gets read, and a list that gets read is the only kind that works.
